Moonraker is a night orienteering challenge organised annually by the Langley and Iver Rotary Club to raise money, by team member sponsorship, for Rotary supported charities.

It provides teams of 4 with the opportunity to use map-reading skills to complete a 10-mile cross-country circuit and to raise money for charity. The team leader must be at least 16 years old on 6-7th March 2010 and all team members must be at least 14 years old.  The team leader can be a member of your organisation / school / club, or parent / guardian / family member. Some knowledge of map reading and the use of a compass will be necessary. A good pair of walking shoes or walking boots, together with warm clothing must be worn. Further details of equipment and kit will be provided when your team application is accepted. Equipment must be made available for inspection at time of registration at the central reception point at the start of the walk.

The route will be on footpaths, through woodland, common and scrubland and will extend to about 16 kilometres (10 miles).  Teams will be asked to report to a central reception point between 7.00 p.m. and 9.00 p.m. on 6th March 2010. The course should be completed in good time for breakfast on Sunday morning.

At each checkpoint on the route, teams will be asked to provide answers to questions given at the previous checkpoint. The number of correct answers, and time taken to complete each section of the course, will determine the scores achieved by individual teams. This is not a race more a test of initiative and stamina. A cup will be presented to the winning team and a shield to the team raising the most money through sponsorship. Trophies may be retained until Moonraker 2011.

Hot soup and refreshments will be available at the halfway point of the course. An entrance fee of £40 per team will be made to cover refreshments, hire charges and basic organisation costs, so that as much of the money as possible raised by sponsorship can be donated to the charities.

Application forms are available from Keith Jacob, whose contact details are at the head of this sheet. or you can dowload an application form below. Applicants will be provided with full details of the equipment required, reporting time, sponsorship forms, rules and conditions. Please remember that the main aim of Moonraker is to raise funds for charities supported by the Rotary Club. The main Rotary charities to benefit from Moonraker 2010 will be:

Thames Hospicecare, Homestart and charities engaged

in research into cancer and leukaemia plus other Rotary Charities.

Moonraker 2009 raised over £15,000, all of which was distributed to charities selected by L&I Rotary Club and the participating teams.
